ABOUT US
Golden State is a California-focused, Los Angeles-based nonprofit news analysis and commentary publication that is building a public forum for informed and fact-based discussion and debate about the issues, ideas, policies and people shaping California and its largest metropolitan area, Los Angeles.Golden State is nonpartisan and does not exist to further the interests of any particular officeholder, political party or advocacy group. It is an independent nonprofit news organization whose mission is to provide an open forum for exchanging fact-based, thoughtful ideas. We seek to make our readers aware, not angry.
INTERNSHIP POSITION
Except for occasionally meeting with the editors in person to work and/or strategize, this internship is remote. You must use your own computer and phone. An intern’s duties are expected to be – but not limited to – the following:- Pitch, research and write bylined articles for Golden State.
- Participate in weekly editorial meetings with the editors.
- Maintain regular contact with the editors for guidance and work updates.
- Assist editors and outside writers with research and/or editing as needed.
- Contribute social media posts.
- Contribute to our twice-a-week newsletter, Golden State Report.
The ideal Golden State intern is a self-starter who knows enough about California policy and politics – or is a quick study of both – to formulate their own pitches. Of course, the editors will evaluate and shape ideas, but the ultimate responsibility of seeing an article or a project through to its completion rests with the intern. Since we are a commentary and news analysis publication, intellectual honesty is a must: The intern must be committed to finding and fairly representing the truth – both when presenting facts and arguing an opinion based on them – and be open to changing course when their research and reporting require it.
To apply: Fill out this Google form.
Please note: Applicants designated as finalists will be forwarded to partner news organizations for final selection.
The deadline to apply is March 20, 2026.
