Professor Sauvage and archaeology students will be digitizing seals in the collection of the Archaeology Center in collaboration with staff from the Yale Babylonian Collection in 2022. Seals offer a rich source for the understanding of the ancient world, but standards in publication have long hindered scholarly engagement with these miniature artworks. To help students and researchers connect to objects in the collection, students will be creating state-of-the-art photographs of 33 seals in the collection as part of their coursework at LMU. CLAR students and students in CLAR 2340 will have the opportunity to gain hands-on experience working with ancient artifacts and exposure to digital humanities practices. The detailed documentation of collections of seals, large and small, will enable new research efforts by scholars worldwide.
