We explored one passage from each of Homer's epics that contains a ludicrously inappropriate formula. Our examination will reveal how Homer’s formulas conveyed greater significance within their oral traditions than we recognize when we read them as written texts and how both epics use humor differently to reverberate their deeper thematic concerns

BCE to the 1st c. CE, including well-known classical poets such as Sappho, Ovid, and Horace, this anthology of Latin and Greek Lyric poetry offers a multiplicity of voices and personalities from the ancient Mediterranean. Prof. Andromache Karanika: "Women's Epics" (2024)
Professor Andromache Karanika presents "Women's Epics: Wedding, Trauma, and the Female Storytelling in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey" as a part of the Classics and Archaeology Lecture Series. This talk will consider a range of different scenes in Homer's Iliad and Odyssey from the female perspective. It will look at how female characters weave their stories in the greater epic narrative with a focus on Helen, Penelope, Nausicaa, and Andromache. A book presentation of Artifactual by Elizabeth Anne Davis from the Anthropology Department at Princeton University with Katerina Zacharia of LMU Classics & Archaeology, and Chris Jackson of International Relations. The book explores how forensic investigations of missing persons lost to the violence of the Cyprus conflict, as well documentary films and archival photographs and footage, can retell and recontextualize conflicts between and within the Greek-Cypriot and Turkish-Cypriot communities.
