As LMU’s home for international and multilingual learning, the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures is committed to cultivating broadly educated, transculturally fluent, and compassionate individuals. Grounded in the humanities, we envision a future in which our graduates, equipped with the skills to transcend linguistic and cultural differences, will forge alliances, form communities, and inspire collaborative actions across the world to meet the challenges facing humanity in the twenty-first century. Our interdisciplinary coursework, cross-cultural programs, and immersive experiences in languages other than English prompt students to become persons “with and for others” in the Ignatian tradition. Drawing on local and international sources, our innovative pedagogy thus encourages them to think and act as critical agents of social change working together to create a better world. Our vision is inspired by the languages we speak, by the literatures and cultures we study and teach, and by the material on which we conduct research. Our commitment is strengthened in the face of the injustices we witness and experience, including the inequities of globalization. As a department, we perceive multilingual education as a vital resource in building solidarity with the racialized, the marginalized, and the minoritized. Together, we endeavor to offer a rigorous humanistic foundation for the kind of international learning and engagement that will inspire the next generation of responsible individuals to work toward a more just, inclusive, and egalitarian world.
