Wars after Wars: Lessons from the Unfinished Korean War
When and how does a war truly "end"? How do people cope with the territorial, political, and familial divisions and tensions that persist "after" the war?
To help us delve into these questions, we will be joined by two anthropologists, Eleana Kim (UC Irvine) and Clara Han (Johns Hopkins), who have written about the ongoing struggles and violence that have persisted since the Korean War. As we explore the continuing tension and trauma of the Korean War, we will collectively reflect on how to understand, address, and teach the brutality of wars, not just as military conflicts in confined areas but as an intergenerational and transnational inheritance of violence. Students in the Economic and Political Issues in Contemporary Asia (ASPA 3500) and Transpacific Korea (ASPA/APAM 3710) will join the conversation, sharing their insights and questions based on class discussions.
About the Bellarmine Forum
The Bellarmine Forum is LMU's annual celebration of the life of the mind, offered by the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts. The 2023-24 Bellarmine Forum invites students, faculty, and the entire LMU community to think about how we understand “internationalization” and how to break it down into what that actually means to us.
