BCLA Master of Arts Programs

Bioethics – The Master of Arts in Bioethics balances a liberal arts and science curriculum with a commitment to social justice, inviting interdisciplinary exploration of contemporary issues in healthcare and research. In this COVID-19 pandemic, an M.A. in Bioethics ensures critical preparation for those seeking careers in healthcare and biotechnology industry; anticipating medical or law school; or who want to contribute to policy and practice in any organization in this era of biohazards. English – The Master of Arts in English offers students the opportunity to hone and apply their creative, communication, and critical skills in one of three distinct tracks of study: Literature, Creative Writing, or Composition and Rhetoric. The program’s tracks all prepare graduates for a range of professional paths including doctoral study, teaching, and many writing-based careers whether in journalism, communication, the non-profit sector, or any business, where excellent writing skills are a top priority of employers. Philosophy – The Master of Arts in Philosophy prepares students to think rigorously, write well, analyze sharply, argue persuasively, and imagine broadly through engagement with Eastern and Western philosophies. Students apply philosophy to contemporary critical issues, building the intellectual foundations and skills for effective leadership. Graduates leave the program ready to pursue doctoral study, law school, medical school, or even careers in film and other storytelling industries. Theological Studies – The Department of Theological Studies offers a Master of Arts in Theology and a Master of Arts in Pastoral Theology. Religion and spirituality are among the most powerful forces in people’s lives, especially at times like these. Through research and in-depth study of the world’s major traditions students develop the ethical and contemplative practices that support success across fields, enhance leadership, and contribute to the well-being of colleagues, employees, and communities. MA students explore biblical, historical, systematic, moral and comparative theology, linked to careers in pastoral ministry, and many other areas. Richard Garcia, M.A. ’10, founded Alma Backyard Farms in 2013, a non-profit in East Los Angeles, that offers urban farming training for formerly incarcerated adults. Read more about Richard.

Yoga Studies – The Master of Arts in Yoga Studies integrates theory and practice with the philosophical and theological underpinnings of a rich history and tradition that has evolved into a multi-billion-dollar industry. Students enjoy many opportunities to engage with Los Angeles, bringing contemporary wellness and mindfulness to many contexts and community needs. Graduates go on to doctoral study, as well as successful careers across the healthcare industries and in private enterprise.
