Eleni Kafetzi
The Caloyeras Center is excited to welcome back Dr. Eleni Kafetzi for her 3rd year as artist-in-residence for the BCLA Creative Experience Seminar, "Modern Greek Theater: Influences and Performance" as part of the Center’s commitment to supporting local artists.
Dr. Kafetzi is a Los Angeles–based director, producer, writer, interdisciplinary artist, and educator working at the intersection of performing and visual arts, including theatre, music, movement, film, and video. Her practice focuses on creating immersive, multisensory experiences that bridge disciplines, cultures, and audiences, with an emphasis on work that is both innovative and socially resonant.
Dr. Kafetzi facilitates a 2-week workshop where students go through the process of staging and performing a contemporary Greek play gaining practical experience and insight into modern Greek theatre as both an artistic and cultural form. Blending critical study with creative practice, students experiment with form, spatial awareness, set design and modes of storytelling.
The Caloyeras Center’s Artist-in-Residence program is dedicated to promoting local creatives by offering meaningful opportunities for engagement with students and the wider community. The program invites artists to share their knowledge and bring contemporary perspectives into the study of Modern Greek theater. By fostering dialogue between artistry and academic exploration, the program strengthens both the cultural landscape of the community and the next generation of theatre-makers.
The program has also played an important role in nurturing original creative work, including supporting the development of the award-winning Women of Zalongo by Maria Cominis, as well as several theatrical productions by local creatives.
