Vision statement
LMU Urban and Environmental Studies is committed to a global, interconnected, and engaged approach to the study of urbanization and ecological change. Learning with us means moving beyond mono-causal explanations of climate change or economic inequality to consider the multi-valent and multi-scalar environmental, social, and political-economic dynamics that shape the world today. Our scholarship is grounded in Los Angeles yet global in scope; faculty research ranges from conservation in Chile, to immigrant communities in Anaheim, to solar energy in China, to military bases across U.S. territories. Our teaching makes the most of these experiences and networks, equipping students to draw connections between the global and the local. We prioritize and elevate decolonial and Indigenous perspectives and methodologies, thinking with authors and ideas that have been historically marginalized in our disciplines. Our goal is to empower our students to critically examine global challenges and their proposed solutions, and in doing so, to act as catalysts for a socially and environmentally just future.
