Major and Minor Requirements

Major Requirements

Students who major in EVST will take 11 classes and can expect to complete the major with around 42 semester hours of work (though students may finish slightly over or under this number, dependent upon exact courses taken as the major is a combination of 3 and 4 unit classes in BCLA and CSE).

The course requirements are as follow:

Lower division courses

  • EVST 1000: Introduction to Environmental Studies
  • EVST 1010: Introduction to Geographic Information Systems
  • ENVS 101: Introduction to Environmental Science

Upper division courses

  • EVST 3010: Environmental Policy
  • EVST 3020: Sustainable Cities
  • EVST 4001: The Environmental Studies Capstone Seminar (Typically offered in Spring only)
  • One Humanities Distribution Course (such as HIST 3452, PHIL 3220, THST 3780)
  • One Social Science Distribution Course (such as ECON 4160, POLS 4250, URBN 3045)
  • One Environmental Science Distribution Course, plus lab if applicable (such as BIOL 321, ENVS 250, ENVS 279, ENVS 504)
  • One Ethics and Justice Distribution Course (such as PHIL 3110, WGST 3200)
  • One additional elective

No more than four lower division courses may be used toward the major, including the three required lower division major courses.

One and two semester hour courses do not count toward the 11 course requirement.

Minor Requirements

The EVST minor is complementary to numerous majors at LMU, including Political Science, Economics, Urban Studies, Philosophy, Civil Engineering, and Business Administration.

The minor consists of six classes that can be satisfied with between 18 and 24 semester hours, given differences in semester hours in participating departments. Students will generally complete the minor with 22 semester hours of work.

The course requirements are as follow:

  • EVST 1000: Introduction to Environmental Studies
  • ENVS 101: Introduction to Environmental Science
  • One Humanities Elective (such as HIST 3452, PHIL 3110, THST 3780, WNST 3200)
  • One Social Science Elective (such as ECON 4160, URBN 3045, URBN 3046)
  • One Environmental Science Elective (such as BIOL 321, ENVS 250, ENVS 279)
  • EVST 4001: The Environmental Studies Capstone Seminar (Typically offered in Spring only)

Only one of the three elective courses may be lower division.
