1. Major/extracurriculars/volunteering?
I double majored in International Relations and Psychology with a minor in Modern Greek Studies. During my time at LMU, I have been involved in many extracurricular activities. I was a member of Delta Zeta Sorority. I was also a member of the Creare Service Organization where I volunteered weekly at Mar Vista Family Center as a tutor for elementary school students in Culver City. I also participated in LMU Share a Meal weekly runs to Venice Beach where we handed out hot food, snacks, and water to the unhoused population. Finally, I was the Athlete Co-Coordinator for LMU Special Games 2024, an event that invites athletes with physical and intellectual disabilities to participate in two weekends of non-competitive sports and activities.
2. Why did you decide to minor in Modern Greek Studies?
When I learned that LMU had a Modern Greek Studies program I was very excited as I saw it as a chance to learn more about and grow closer to my Greek heritage. I grew up eating Greek food and celebrating Greek Orthodox holidays, however, I struggled with learning the language. This program has helped me grow closer to my Greek-American relatives and my relatives living in Greece!
3. What did you study in the Program?
The program provided me with the opportunity to study many facets of modern Greek culture. I was able to take classes on the Greek language and Orthodox Christianity. During my time abroad on the LMU Odyssey Program, I was able to learn about how the ancient and modern Greek worlds differ and intersect in Greece.
4. How did the program’s Modern Greek Studies community impact your experience at LMU?
The Modern Greek Studies community allowed me to have many experiences that would have never been possible. One of my favorite experiences was the month-long summer study abroad program in which I was able to travel around Greece while taking classes. The Modern Greek Studies program also provided me with opportunities to meet members of the Hellenic community in Los Angeles. I was invited to attend the American Hellenic Council of California’s annual award gala in which they honored our program director, Christina Bogdanou, someone who I was lucky to call a mentor during my time at LMU. Finally, the minor supplemented my studies in International Relations by allowing me to meet the Greek Ambassador to the United States and the Consul General of Greece in Los Angeles.
5. What are you doing now and what are your professional goals?
Currently I'm completing a Master’s in Data Science and Public Policy at University College London. In the future, I hope to be working at an organization that allows me to make and uphold policies that contribute to making the world a better place!
6. Anything that you would like to share about the program with prospective students?
I wholeheartedly recommend this program to anyone who is at all interested in Greece, ancient or modern. You do not have to have Greek heritage or any prior knowledge of Greece to gain meaningful experiences from this program. Being a part of the supportive, caring, and knowledgeable community that is the Modern Greek Studies department will be the highlight of your LMU career.
