1. Major/extracurriculars/volunteering?
After taking a Greek literature class for my First Year Seminar requirement, I decided to get involved in the Modern Greek Studies department for all four years of college. Additionally, I served as editor-in-chief of the Los Angeles Loyolan, LMU's award-winning news publication. I also participated in The Consort Singers, LMU's premiere vocal ensemble, who I toured with to New York and Costa Rica for musical tours. Additionally, I served on the Standards Board of the Delta Sigma Phi fraternity, where I made tons of friends and made great college memories.
2. Why did you decide to minor in Modern Greek Studies?
It was a no-brainer for me, especially when I heard the department offers modern Greek language classes, which is extremely rare for mid-size universities like LMU. I also take pride in my Greek heritage and was impressed by the many courses that could expand my knowledge of my cultural background, including classes on Greek Orthodoxy, Greek philosophy, Greek theater, and Greek history.
3. How did the program’s Modern Greek Studies community impact your experience at LMU?
Greeks inherently understand the value of connecting with fellow Hellenes at a high level, but I must stress that when I accepted my offer at LMU, I didn't even know how robust their Modern Greek Studies program was. Getting involved in the community transformed my time at LMU for the better, because I was able to attend special events, receive a scholarship through the department, get a job in the department and meet Greeks just like me.
4. What are you doing now and what are your professional goals?
I now write for The National Herald, a prominent Greek-American newspaper and serve as Media Director of To Kinima Tou Ethnous, a Greek Diaspora political group centered upon motivating Greek Americans, Australians, and Canadians to return to Greece to improve the economic and social system.
5. Anything that you would like to share about the program with prospective students?
There is no other University or college with the breadth of Greek history, religion, language, and art classes that LMU has. There is also a fantastic network of Greek students, staff, and community members to enjoy. I can confidently say that committing to a Modern Greek Studies minor was one of the best decisions I made in college.
