Research Assistant
Shantell L. Steve is a master’s level Research Assistant at the Psychology Applied Research Center at LMU. She received her Bachelor of Arts degree in Sociology, concentrating in cities, communities and culture from the University of San Diego. As an undergraduate, Shantell became a McNair scholar; where she designed, conducted, and presented findings on her own research that examined the association between social environmental risk factors, health behavior and health outcomes among African American women in South East San Diego. Following her undergraduate work, she received her Masters of Science degree in Behavioral and Social Health Sciences from Brown University, School of Public Health. While attending Brown University, she was able to attain a research assistantship at the University of Chicago where she published her first co-authorship paper on Social Disorder and Type 2 Diabetes in Current Diabetes Report Journal. Further, Shantell worked in local and state advocacy as an Associate at the Sargent Shriver National Center on Poverty Law. As an Associate, she assisted in managing approaches that addressed barriers to participation of programs that serve infants, toddlers and their families in Illinois.
Shantell’s interests are related to implementing and evaluating multidimensional community driven interventions that promote positive health outcomes and lead to community-driven policies. She wants to assist communities in recovery, assure the quality and accessibility of services, and promote positive outcomes and feasible solutions for those susceptible to disparities within and across systems.
