McKenzie Martin '23 | 2022-23 Fellow
About:
McKenzie Martin graduated in the Honor’s Program majoring in Health and Human Science with a minor in Health and Society. She is a native to Chicago and spent the summer as a Breakthrough Fellow in the Strategy and Consulting Department at Pfizer. She has worked as a contact tracing team lead for the Los Angeles Department of Public Health and a Racial Equity and Community Engagement intern with the City of Chicago. McKenzie has sought out these experiences to gain valuable experience in public health. Her career goal is to be part of efforts to improve the U.S. healthcare system especially as it impacts marginalized communities. Her interest in the intersection between health and race has deepened through her hands-on experiences and Health and Society coursework. As a Barreto Fellow, McKenzie looks forward to examining how the use of race within healthcare organizations can have unintended consequences for racialized communities. Specifically, she seeks to look at the potential impacts of using non-racial identifiers in the collection of health data. She hopes her research will add a new perspective on how we can better address racial disparities without reinforcing systemic injustices.
