Nina Perl knew she wanted to study languages since her first Spanish class in middle school. Wanting a new challenge, she chose German as her other language for the Modern Languages major. She was unable to study abroad through LMU due to COVID, which only made her more determined to live abroad after graduation. She was thrilled to be accepted to the United States Teaching Assistants program in Austria. Through the program, she has strengthened her passion for teaching and sharpened her German skills. Living in a small town, but with access to major cities through the country’s excellent public transportation system, she has gotten to know many facets of Austrian culture. “The Christmas markets all around the region were an absolute delight. Drinking the hot spiced wine while bundled against the cold, admiring the stalls full of handmade goods. It was a totally new experience and I loved every second of it.” She plans to spend another year with the program in Austria, before moving on to teach English in Spain. She would never have qualified for the Austrian program, which requires an intermediate knowledge of German, without the Modern Languages major and the wonderful professors who supported her every step of the way.
