LMU Journalism alum Brynn Shaffer ’22 recently covered an important speech by Cardinal Robert McElroy at a conference hosted by the Franciscan School of Theology at the University of San Diego for the National Catholic Reporter. McElroy spoke about the need for the church to be more inclusive to marginalized communities who have in the past not felt completely welcome. As Shaffer wrote, the Cardinal said that Pope Francis’s “process of synodal consultation … is fundamentally a ‘call to conversion to the whole church.’"
“There is no way I would have had the skill set, let alone the confidence, to walk into this conference alone if it wasn't for my LMU journalism classes and professors,” Shaffer said afterward. “I feel like the stories I did in my classes really mimicked what it's like to be assigned a story from your editor and completely set the foundation for me to go out, post grad, and feel confident in my reporting."
