Women's and Gender Studies Department

Women's and Gender Studies engages students in a critical understanding of the complex ways gender shapes the world around them, particularly in relation to race, sexuality, class, and other social factors.

Women's and Gender Studies invites all students to participate in a vibrant interdisciplinary program of study that places women at the center of traditional disciplines. It encourages the critical examination of academic fields such as the humanities, social sciences, natural sciences, and the arts as well as the gendered assumptions that underwrite them.

Our mission is to foster a vigorous intellectual environment where students can develop their analytical thinking skills and conceptual tools for social change.

“What is your gender? A qualitative study on surveillance and the instability of gender categorization at LMU.”
The Lee Yong-Soo 'Comfort Women' Human Rights Research and Creative Activity Fellowship
The Department of Women's and Gender Studies is honored to house this trailblazing Fellowship to support Faculty and Student projects that study sexual violence, sexual slavery, and human trafficking. Named after a survivor of the 'comfort women' atrocity, Lee Yong-soo is an avid activist who traveled the world to give testimonies, promote education, and demand formal acknowledgement and apology from the Japanese government. The fellowship is to be used in the forthcoming academic year to support the recipients in completing a significant scholarly or creative project that increases awareness of the historical and contemporary significance of “comfort women” or comparative experiences of other state sanctioned sexual violence, sexual slavery, and human trafficking occurring in the world.
