About the Interfaith Forum

Founded in alignment with Loyola Marymount University's Jesuit-Catholic heritage and commitment to interfaith dialogue, the annual LMU Jewish-Catholic Interfaith Forum is dedicated to providing opportunities for intellectual exchange between these two traditions.

  • 2020: From Part of the Problem to Part of the Solution - Antisemitism and the Church

    Date: February 25, 2020
    Location: Roski Dining Room, University Hall

    Featuring:

    • Keynote lecture by Rabbi David Rosen, KSG, CBE, director of interreligious affairs for the American Jewish Committee and its Robert and Harriet Heilbrunn Institute for International Interreligious Understanding.
    • Panel discussion with Father Alexei Smith, director of ecumenical and interreligious affairs for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles, and Richard Hirschhaut, director of AJC Los Angeles and moderated by Father Cyril Hovorun, acting director of the Huffington Ecumenical Institute.

  • 2018: The Decalogue: Renewing Modern Life

    • A panel discussion to kick off a year of enhanced community programming focused on the Decalogue and celebrating the 10th anniversary of Jewish Studies at LMU.
    • Book presentation by David Hazony, author of "The Ten Commandments: How Our Most Ancient Moral Text Can Renew Modern Life."
    • Panel discussion with Monica Osborne, author of "The Midrashic Impulse and the Contemporary Literary Response to Trauma," Father Alexei Smith, director of ecumenical and interreligious affairs for the Archdiocese of Los Angeles; and moderated by David Suissa, editor of the Jewish Journal.

  • ‌2017: The Jewish Cardinal

    Date: February 22, 2017

    Featuring:

    • Film Screening of 'The Jewish Cardinal,' directed by Ilan Duran Cohen, which tells the amazing true story of Jean-Marie Lustiger, the son of Polish-Jewish immigrants, who maintained his cultural identity as a Jew even after converting to Catholicism at a young age, and later joining the priesthood.
    • Response by John Connelly, Professor of History at University of California Berkeley, and Rabbi Mark Diamond, Lecturer at Loyola Marymount University.
