Bernstein's MASS is simultaneously epic and controversial. Originally composed at the request of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis for the opening of the John F. Kennedy Center in 1971, it uses the traditional Roman Catholic Mass as a framework for exploring themes of faith, doubt, and tolerance. The music is equal parts Broadway, opera, the blues, and rock ā€˜nā€™ roll, and comes together with Hebrew, English, and Latin narratives to deliver a profound message of peace and unity.
