Students may participate in study abroad programs as a way to complement and enhance their academic goals and learning experience. While many programs are open to all majors, the following are especially enriching for Urban and Environmental Studies students:

Puntarenas, Costa Rica

In the Costa Rica Tropical Science & Culture summer course, students tour numerous interior and coastal locations around Costa Rica, including the Caribbean coast, the Central Valley, the cloud forest region, and the Pacific coast, staying at numerous field stations and hotels. Tropical wildlife is examined within the cultural context of this beautiful and ecologically diverse Central American country. Nesting marine turtles, tropical cloud forests, rain forests, cave ecology and the cultural contexts of religion, politics, dance, music, food, and art are just some of the topics that are examined during this extensive 18 day summer abroad experience. This program is administered by the Center for Urban Resilience (CURes) Office in Seaver College of Science and Engineering and is open to all academic majors. This three unit elective course is directly transferred to students’ LMU transcripts and counts toward the completion of their degrees.
