Major and Minor Requirements

Major Requirements

The integrative URBN major requirements provide an academic basis and methodological framework for understanding and analyzing the complex processes of urbanization. The areas of specialization provide in-depth study in fields of special interest to facilitate the development of the student's research skills, analytical abilities, and knowledge of a particular subject in preparation for advanced study or professional employment.  

The major requires 10 classes for a total of 40 semester hours

The course requirements are as follow:

Lower division courses: 16 semester hours

  • URBN 1000: The Urban World
  • URBN 1010: Urban Analysis
  • SOCL 2000: Qualitative Research Methods
  • SOCL 2100: Quantitative Research Methods

Upper Division Courses: 24 semester hours

  • URBN 3045: Urban Planning
  • URBN 3046: Sustainable Cities
  • URBN 3047: Community Development
  • URBN 4000: Senior Project
  • 8 semester hours of approved courses selected from the following areas in any combination:
    • Law and Justice
    • Urban Politics, Public Administration, and Policy Analysis
    • Urban Culture
    • Urban-Ethnic Communities
    • Urban Planning

A complete list of the courses approved for the area requirements is available in the University Bulletin; additional courses may be substituted with the approval of the Department Chair. 

Minor Requirements

Due to the interdisciplinary nature of the Urban Studies Program, students in many majors (including African American Studies, Chicana/o and Latina/o Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology) may find a minor in Urban Studies appropriate. In most cases, majors in these fields can easily complete the requirements for an Urban Studies minor along with their major in four years.

Course Requirements for the Minor: 20 semester hours total

The course requirements are as follow:

Lower Division Courses: 8 semester hours

  • URBN 1000 – The Urban World
  • URBN 1010 – Urban Analysis 

Upper Division Courses: 12 semester hours

  • URBN 3045 – Urban Planning
  • URBN 3046 – Sustainable Cities
  • URBN 3047 – Community Development
