DISTINGUISHED SCHOLAR IN LOS ANGELES URBAN RESEARCH
Ruth Galanter, M.A.
Ms. Galanter occupies the Bellarmine College Visiting Chair in Los Angeles Urban Research for the 2005-2006 academic year. In that position, Ms. Galanter regularly participates as an expert guest lecturer in various Urban Studies courses as well as supervising individual student research projects in Urban Studies. She also serves as a resource person for LMU faculty conducting research in metropolitan Los Angeles, works with the research associates of the Leavey Center for the Study of Los Angeles, participates in the annual Urban Issues Lecture Series, and contributes to the Bellarmine Forum.
Ms. Galanter brings an extraordinary wealth of experience and expertise to the Chair. From 1987 to 2003, Ms. Galanter served four terms as an elected Councilmember for the City of Los Angeles. During her distinguished career as a Councilmember, Ms. Galanter served as both Council President and President Pro Tem as well as on several critical council committees including the Planning and Land Use Committee, the Environmental Quality Committee, and the Budget and Finance Committee. Ms. Galanter also served as a member and Chair of the California State South Coast Regional Coastal Commission. During her career in local politics, Ms. Galanter was the recipient of numerous national and regional awards for her community service and dedication to the protection of the environment.
Ms. Galanter, is principal of Galanter and Company, a respected consulting firm specializing in land use, urban infrastructure, environmental policy, and political strategy.
