Elizabeth Watkins is Dean of the Graduate Division and Professor of History of Health Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco. She earned her BA in Biology and her PhD in the History of Science, both at Harvard University. Her research focuses on the interplay among medicine, science, commerce, and culture in the United States in the 20th and 21st centuries, and she has published on the topics of the history of pharmaceuticals; the history of birth control; and the history of hormones, gender, and aging. She is the author of On the Pill: A Social History of Oral Contraceptives (1998) and The Estrogen Elixir: A History of Hormone Replacement Therapy in America (2007), and co-editor of Medicating Modern America: Prescription Drugs in History (2007) and Prescribed: Writing, Filling, Using, and Abusing the Prescription in Modern America (2012).
