Spanish
Mission
Spanish is one of the two majors offered by the Department of
Modern Languages and Literatures. The philosophy and goals of our
Department are based on the mission statement of Loyola Marymount
University.
The Encouragement of
Learning: The Spanish program gives
students language and cultural experiences through a blend of
direct and communicative approaches. This leads to advanced
proficiency in both receptive and productive skills.
The Education of The Whole Person:
A graduate of our program has received from other students,
teachers, and mentors the insight to recognize his/her intellectual
and emotional strengths and to be able to apply them in a
professional life that promotes the respect and understanding of
the language and cultures of Spanish speaking
populations.
The Service of
Faith: Our students are taught
through literature, history, and the arts, that the Spanish world
begins with the merger of Judaic Hebrew, Muslim Arabic, and
Christian Indo-European cultures and in the Americas it
incorporates pre-Columbian indigenous influences. This knowledge
prepares our graduates to respect religious differences, and
encourage them to reinforce their beliefs and to nurture other
peoples choices.
The Promotion of
Justice: Our graduates will receive
the tools to foster intercultural understanding, which is the basis
for social justice and social harmony.
Students with a major from our
department have been recently admitted to a variety of Graduate
programs at Duke University, Harvard University, USC, USF, NYU, and
many other institutions. They have also found jobs as teachers, in
the entertainment industry, and in the business world in the U.S.,
and abroad. Others volunteer in the Peace Corps, Americorps, Teach
for America and the PLACE program.

Study Abroad
We strongly encourage all students, whether considering a major in
the Department or not, to study in Latin America and Spain. In
recent years, students have taken advantage of programs in Central
and South America, Caribbean, Mexico and Spain to enhance their
education and opportunities.
