Dear Liberal Studies Major:

On behalf of the Liberal Studies Program and the Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts, I welcome you to the Liberal Studies major. This major is designed for students who anticipate careers in elementary school teaching and who seek a teaching credential. The program thoroughly incorporates the standards of the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing standards as mandated by Senate Bill 2042. Because of the rigorous requirements of the State of California for teacher credentialing, the Liberal Studies major here at LMU is very specific in terms of the coursework you will be taking. With careful planning, however, it is possible to complete both the subject-matter and the teacher-preparation course in four years. Your Liberal Studies advisor will make every effort to guide you through the program.

Elementary school education is at the foundation of the development of our children and youth. You have chosen an important path that will enable you to improve society through the education of its growing young people. As a future elementary school teacher, you will take responsibility for the future of your community and help fulfill the LMU mission of service to others and the promotion of justice.

In order to prepare you for this important role, the program requires you to take advanced courses in almost every discipline including the sciences, humanities, social sciences and the arts. This is not an easy task, but it is rewarding and fulfilling. The program of coursework is coordinated with the teaching credential program offered by the School of Education. The Liberal Studies program works closely in collaboration with the School of Education, and we aim to give you an integrated four-year experience.

This handbook outlines the whole subject-matter program and the related teacher-preparation credential courses. I am pleased to welcome you to the program, and our faculty and staff are available to help you throughout your LMU career as Liberal Studies majors.

Sincerely,

Michael E. Engh, S. J.
Dean
