COURSE DESCRIPTION
This experience will introduce you to one of the oldest and most fascinating countries in Eastern Europe while immersing you in an academic experience that closely resonates with this location. You will examine the history of Jews in Poland leading up to, during, and following the Holocaust. During this two-week session you will attain a basic knowledge of Polish history and culture. While studying in Poland, you will become familiar with the richness of pre-World War II Jewish life and will experience firsthand the diversity and vitality of Poland’s contemporary cultural landscape.
CULTURAL EXCURSIONS
The program begins with a guided tour of Krakow, the cultural capital of Poland, and one of the largest, oldest, and most beautiful cities in the world. The main landmarks include the Main Market Square with Saint Mary’s Basilica, Wawel Castle, and the National Art Museum. Krakow has 28 museums, public art galleries, and several famous theatres. It also hosts many cultural events including the International Jewish Festival. Additional tours are scheduled over the two weeks as part of the academic curriculum, including the cities of Lodz and Warsaw, the capital of Poland, featuring a walking tour of Old Town, a visit to the Jewish Historical Institute, the Warsaw Ghetto site, a synagogue, and a banquet in a typical Polish restaurant.
