About the Program
The Humanities major is an interdisciplinary program. In the first two years the student acquires a broad background in the arts, history, and literature. Language study through the advanced level is also required. In the second two years, the student concentrates in a particular area of interest. The concentration consists of five (5) upper division courses taken from departmental offerings in Archaeology, Art History, Classics, English, French, German, Greek, History, Italian, Latin, Philosophy, Spanish, or Theological Studies. The concentration is then supported by two (2) upper division history or philosophy courses and two (2) upper division courses in either an ancient or a modern literature selected in consultation with the Humanities advisor.
Each student is required to complete a senior thesis (HMNT 490). The topic will stem from the student’s concentration and after consultation with the Director and the senior thesis advisor. The Director and the student will identify a particular faculty member in the field of his/her concentration as an advisor. The student will then work closely with the advisor to produce a thesis which analyzes the chosen topic from the perspectives of language, literature, art history, history, and philosophy. The senior thesis project will be reviewed and graded by the thesis advisor in consultation with the Director.
