Gretchen comes to us from Boston College where she taught Philosophy for the past three years as an Adjunct Assistant Professor. She earned her B.A. from the University of Notre Dame with a double major in Philosophy and German. She then went on to receive her M.A. and Ph.D. in Philosophy from Catholic University. Her primary research interest is in the work of Edmund Husserl and classical phenomenology. This interest includes the intersection of Philosophy and Literature, especially between Husserl and John Steinbeck. She has a husband, Chris, and a spoiled dachshund named Drake. She grew up in Colorado and is very excited to be returning to the west. Her hobbies include running, hiking, swimming, and cooking.

Joseph is a native of San Pedro, California and University of California Berkeley. He earned his M.A. and Ph.D. from UCLA, also in Sociology. He has been the Interim Director of the Race & Ethnic Studies Institute at Texas A&M University for the past two years. His other work experiences include serving as an Assistant Professor of Sociology at Texas A&M and as a Postdoctoral Fellow in the African American Studies & Research Program at the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign. He recently published his first book “Race, Social Reform and the Making of a Middle Class: The American Missionary Association and Black Atlanta, 1870–1900” (Rowman & Littlefield, 2007). He is currently working on his second book, tentatively titled “Troubling Gentility: Race and Middle Class Mobility in Urban America, 1870–1920.” When not immersed in archives, he enjoys lap swimming and herb gardening

Jennifer earned her B.A. with a double major in International Relations and German as well as her Ph.D in Political Science from the University of California, Davis. She received her M.A. in International Relations from San Francisco State University. This will be her first University teaching position. Her research interests include international norms, human rights and political psychology. She recently visited New York (United Nations) and Washington, D.C. to interview government officials for her research on international norm change. She lives in Santa Monica with her husband, Duane, a sound engineer. Her hobbies include Bikram yoga, listening to music, searching for the perfect cup of tea, and traveling.
