SYNTEXT: 1. The Loyola Marymount University English Department Creative Writing and Creative Literature program emphasizing the interdependence of a. writing and literary studies, b. study and practice, c. an informed knowledge of literature and literary theory, d. the practice of literary creativity, innovation, and process by requiring a combination of both traditional and innovative "creative literature" and "creative writing" courses. 2. A program emphasizing the social/political dimension of literature and the social obligation of the artist in a variety of communities within the Los Angeles area. 3. A program promoting a perspective on literature that is both intergeneric and intertextual both by a. actively integrating the genres of fiction, non-fiction, poetry, drama, screenplays, and teleplays, and b. studying literary works that push or transgress generic, linguistic, and cultural boundaries. v. to think outside the box (i.e. the classroom). SYNTEXT COURSES: Streetread: a. A service learning course allowing literature students to lead their own literacy workshops and book clubs in local Boys' and Girls' Clubs, convalescent centers, inner-city schools, and other communities. Roadread: a. The exploration of literature and film about Los Angeles and other California locations. b. To study the city as one would text. c. A course of excursions (day, weekend, and week-long). v. To dedicate out-of-classroom time to understanding what authors have imagined Los Angeles to be. Roadwrite: a. A writing course steeped in the varied geographies of southern California. b. A course with excursions (day, weekend, week-long). v. To contribute to the local literary geography by writing inspired poems, stories, meditations, and one short play. Streetwrite: a. A service learning course allowing writing students to lead their own creative writing workshops in local Boys' and Girls' Clubs, convalescent centers, inner-city schools, and at-risk communities. |
