LA Miscellany has a long history that begins sometime shortly after WWII.  Originally called El Playano, the journal was founded by Frank Caruthers, who passed management on to Chuck Rosenthal in 1987.  It was at this time that the student editors changed the name to LA Miscellany.

LA Miscellany has always been edited and produced by students and always published only LMU students (and occasionally work is also accepted from staff, but never faculty).  In this light, LA Miscellany is one of the most egalitarian projects on campus.  Anyone who wants to be involved can be.

One mission of LA Miscellany that has remained true over its long history at LMU is fostering the opportunity for students to see their work in print, often for the first time.  LA Miscellany is not about building editorial careers or networking in the literary world; rather, its purpose is to recognize and bring attention to the many talented writers that study at LMU.
