Conference Papers
A rather unique perk of being an LMU Grad Student is that we are able to offer some support for student travel to deliver papers at academic conferences. Conference participation is a crucial part of professional development, and often conference presentations are the best form of networking for students wishing to continue on to doctoral work. Students are encouraged to submit proposals to academic conferences to present scholarly or creative work. A useful way to receive notices about upcoming conferences is the CFP (Call For Papers) list housed at the University of Pennsylvania. The link to the CFP list with subscribing information is:
Students submitting proposals are encouraged to consult with the Graduate Director before doing so, and to submit the abstract or proposal to the Director prior to sending it to the conference organizers. Students whose proposals are accepted for presentation are strongly encouraged to submit their work to the Faculty and Graduate Student Colloquium supervised by Dr. Peters for peer review prior to going to the conference.
Application for Travel Support
Students with accepted proposals for conference presentations may apply for travel support to cover expenses including airfare, lodging, registration, and meals. Travel awards vary depending upon the nature of the conference and the number of applicants in a given semester. To apply for travel support, submit to the Graduate Director documentation showing the abstract and its acceptance by the conference organizers. With this documentation, print out and fill out the LMU Travel Request Form (
available here
). The Graduate Director will award an amount towards your request (we usually can cover airfare at least, if not all basic expenses) and notify you before you make a final commitment to the conference. On your trip, be sure to retain receipts for all travel expenses. Upon return, print out and fill out the LMU Travel Expense Report Form (
available here
) and submit it to Maria Jackson, the Administrative Assistant. You will be reimbursed for the amount designated by the Graduate Director. The processing usually takes about 10-14 days.
