His Eminence Archbishop
Hovnan Derderian
His Eminence Archbishop Hovnan Derderian was born in Lebanon and educated in Lebanon, Armenia and Oxford University, England, where he completed his Theological studies and earned an MA. in Theology. He has served his Church in Canada and the United States.
In 2003 he was elected as the Primate of the Armenian Church of North America Western Diocese. Since assuming his duties in Los Angeles, he has established many parishes throughout the Western United States. He is the author of numerous books and articles in English and Armenian on theological themes that examine the inner life of the faithful and emphasize the value of spirituality.
Among his many interests and concerns are the youth of the Armenian parishes and the professional development of the clergy. He is deeply involved in Ecumenism and is a member of the Southern California Ecumenical Council and the Council of Oriental Orthodox Churches. The Armenian Diocese of the Armenian Church of North America was established in 1898 as one entity, however in 1927 the Diocese was split into two separate entities, Eastern and Western.
His Grace Bishop Maxim
His Grace Bishop Maxim was elected Bishop of the Western American Diocese of the Serbian Orthodox Church in North and South American in 2006.
He studied at the Divinity School at the Theological Faculty of the University of Belgrade, and earned his Masters (in 1996) and his Ph.D. (in 1999) in Theology from University of Athens, Greece. He continued his postdoctoral studies at the Sorbonne, in Paris. In addition to his Archpastoral duties, His Grace Maxim is professor of Patrology and Hagiology at the University of Belgrade, and professor of Patrology at the St. Sava School of Theology in Libertyville, Illinois. He is the author of many theological papers published in Serbia and the United States.
The Western American Diocese of the Serbian Church has 20 parishes, 10 mission parishes, 3 monasteries and 3 Sketes.
