“Bioethics has been an interest of mine since I was introduced to the field during my senior year of high school, then as an undergraduate as I prepared myself to enroll in the Master of Arts in Bioethics Program. The program’s strength is in a multidisciplinary approach to the study of bioethics. In November of 2008, I took on a position as administrative liaison to Glen Komatsu, MD who is the Director of the Doak Center for Palliative Care at Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center in Torrance. The many excellent courses that are offered through The Bioethics Institute, allowed me to apply theory into clinical practice situations. Every faculty member who teaches in The Bioethics Institute is also a clinical ethicist working in many of the medical centers in Los Angeles so they are able to bring this experience to the classroom offering students a very distinct learning environment. Now, after completing my Master of Arts in Bioethics degree in May 2009, I sit as the co-chair of the Bioethics Committee for both Providence Little Company of Mary Medical Center Torrance and San Pedro campuses. As a part of this committee, I assist with ethics consultations, the development of educational programs for both committees and hospitals on ethics topics, as well as policy writing and revision. As a graduate of The Bioethics Institute, I have gained the confidence in my abilities and will continue to be assertive in meeting the needs of others with a kind, gentle and compassionate spirit. The Master of Arts in Bioethics Program has taught me that it is only through my actions that I continue to apply my knowledge and engage in the critical analysis of bioethical discourse.”

“During medical school, I never had the opportunity to take a course specific to the study of Bioethics- it just didn’t exist. I had been a graduate student, studying Theology, when I first learned that a Master of Arts in Bioethics degree was available. I immediately made the decision to apply for admission. What I learned in the course work has inspired me to rethink my personal decisions, and professional relationship with my patients. Studying Bioethics has made me a better clinician. I believe all physicians and other health care professionals would benefit from this program. I have recently submitted an article on Bioethical issues from a Korean perspective to a medical journal, and the program has inspired me to continue to publish on this topic.”

“Since starting the Master of Arts in Bioethics program, I have applied what I have learned to my personal life by making more informed medical choices not only for myself, but also my family as well. As a high school teacher, I knew my students were very concerned with contemporary issues in Bioethics. I made a proposal to my principal to teach an introductory course in Bioethics that would be offered to students to begin a Bioethical dialogue amongst students at the high school level during Fall 2008. The course was so popular that I have been asked to teach it again in Fall 2009. I wish that when I was in high school there would have been a class in Bioethics.”

"An education in Bioethics has proven to be of inestimable value. The curriculum challenges me to be cognizant of the multifaceted implications of health care by requiring knowledge and critical analysis across the disciplines of philosophy, theology, medicine and law. Due to this approach, learning never failed to be interesting, challenging, and dynamic.
My education in Bioethics has created various opportunities for myself and my family. I am currently serving as an Adjunct Professor for Mount St. Mary's College. I am teaching two undergraduate courses in Religious Studies (Biomedical Issues in Christian Ethics) as well as a Graduate course for the Department of Physical Therapy (Medical Ethics). Due to the exceptional education I received, I am now able to share in the mission of the Bioethics Institute as an educator and I hope to endow my own students with knowledge and passion for Bioethics"
