The Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts offers an array of grants to assist BCLA faculty in their scholarship/research projects and creative work. In March 2008, the College hosted a Research Grants Summit. In this meeting, BCLA faculty provided feedback on the types of grants, levels of funding, and timeframe/processes that would facilitate their scholarly and creative work most effectively. This information will be used to develop a revised internal grants program that will be implemented in the 2009-10 academic year.

For 2008-09, a number of interim steps will be taken to strengthen the internal grants program, although its basic structure will remain the same for one more year.

  • The level of funding for BCLA summer research grants will be raised to $5000. Fourteen (14) summer research grants of $5000 will be offered in 2008-09.

  • One Bellarmine Research Award of $10,000 will be given to a proposal that is oriented towards the submission of a major external grant application. This grant may be used at any time during the summer of 2009 and/or 2009-10 academic year to support research leading to the development of an external grant application.

  • All tenure-track faculty members are immediately eligible to apply for internal grants. Specifically, incoming tenure-track faculty members will no longer be required to wait until their second year to apply for summer research awards.

Other, more extensive, changes will be implemented in 2009-10.

The BCLA Scholarship/Research Committee will (a) review applications for each of the awards below (with the exception of the Alternative Break and BCLA First Book Subvention) and (b) provide the Dean with recommendations for funding.

Note that according to IRS regulations, any LMU grant is considered taxable income and should be reported as such for the year it is received. It is unnecessary to provide the University with receipts of purchases related to the project. Please consult your tax advisor for further information and advice.

The university assesses a 30% “fringe” on all wages, salaries, and stipends of faculty and staff at LMU. This internal charge is uniformly assessed to contribute to faculty and staff benefits. The CAO will cover these costs on internal grants that are used as faculty stipends, so that faculty members will NOT have their grants automatically reduced by this university practice.

If you have any questions about the BCLA grants, please contact Yolanda Klishevich at 310.338.2716 or yklishevich@lmu.edu .

The Sponsored Projects Office facilitates external funding for faculty and staff projects to support the University's pursuit of academic excellence.
