Tales from the Dark Side:Transnational Migration,
The Underworld and the 'Other' Greek of the Diaspora
by Prof. Thomas W. Gallant
This lecture examines the social world of the Greek men and women who migrated between the Ionian Islands, the Kingdom of Greece and the Ottoman Empire during the 19th century.
Rather than focusing on the elites and the wealthy, Prof. Gallant focuses his attention on the lives of working people -- sailors, stevedores, artisans and even prostitutes -- many of whom fell afoul of the law. While theirs is not a story that is well-known, even among historians, this lecture contends that no history of the Greek Diaspora will be complete unless it contains their history.
It is a vivid social history of the lives of urban migrants.
