Liberal Arts in Action
LMU Bellarmine College of Liberal Arts launched Liberal Arts in Action (LAIA) as a way to engage students on issues that impact us both locally and globally. We aim to create space for conversations and encounters that inspire our imaginations and intellects, support our individual and collective well-being, and assist in planning for and building our futures.

Bellarmine Forum
An annual celebration of the life of the mind in relation to LMU's mission and heritage. Each year, BCLA offers a series of interconnected events and courses that engage an important question or theme.
Justice on Trial Film Festival
The films presented as part of the festival address the impact of mass incarceration. Filmmakers, advocates, and those affected are given a platform to discover the human side of the story and project unheard voices to a world deafened by the negative images and stereotypes presented by the media.
Virtual Event Series
Discussions and workshops featuring BCLA Distinguished Faculty members. This is an opportunity to get a glimpse of what liberal arts disciplines bring to an exploration of topics that are fascinating and thought provoking to engage us as a community.

Engaged Learning
Get off the bluff. Apply your classroom knowledge to important social issues. In Engaged Learning (EL) classes, the world is your classroom. An EL course might include field research, off-site service, or even international travel. BCLA has resources for students and faculty, and we can help connect you with other opportunities throughout the university.
Global Learning & Immersions
Change your perspective. Travel. Conduct research. Become an ethical leader and a global citizen by studying in a new setting and making real world connections to course material. Global learning in BCLA encompasses courses and experiences that seek to engage and understand local, regional, national, and international communities and issues.
Courses
Seminar on Justice, Service & Community
As part of the Liberal Arts in Action series, BCLA is offering a 1 unit upper-division course: Seminar on Justice, Service, and Community Engagement (LIBA 3998, CRN 76897). This discussion-based course will start meeting weekly after Spring Break 2022 and will focus on the following topics:
- Community and Partnerships
- Diversity and Community
- Critical Race Theory and Critical Theory
- Approaches to community engagement
- Community-based Learning
- Self-reflection
This course is fully online and meets every Wednesday from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m., starting on March 9. It is designed to complement the other courses on your schedule.
Academic Wellness & Career Success
As part of the Liberal Arts in Action series, BCLA is offering an Academic Wellness and Career Success Course (LIBA 1998, CRN: 76688) that is open to all students! Emphasis is placed on holistic student development.

The course is fully online and meets every Tuesday from 5:00 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., starting on February 8. At only 2 units, it is meant to compliment the other courses on your schedule and will be offered in Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.
